LEXINGTON, Ky. ? After a two-week break since playing in its last tournament, the Kentucky women’s golf team returns to action Monday when it travels to Wallace, N.C., to participate in the Lady Seahawk Invitational. The two-day event, hosted by the University of North Carolina-Wilmington, is being played at the River Landing Golf Club.
The opening 36 holes of the tournament will be played beginning Monday at 9:30 a.m. with a shotgun start, while the event’s final 18 holes will be played on Tuesday. Participating teams in the tournament?s 13-team field include: Ball State, Birmingham Southern, Elon, East Tennessee State, James Madison, Maryland, Mercer, Newberry, Richmond, Southern Mississippi, UNC-Wilmington and Western Carolina.
“We are excited about this tournament and trying to gain momentum as we get closer to SECs,” UK Coach Stephanie Barker said. “We have had some decent rounds, but I?d really like to see us break 300 in our rounds this tournament and continue that throughout the season. Everyone on this team is very talented and they are more than capable of achieving this goal if they believe in themselves.”
Kentucky is coming off a ninth place finish at the SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational after carding a three-round total of 930 (304-310-316) at the two-day event hosted by the University of Florida.
Senior Sunshine State native Ali Kicklighter (DeLand, Fla.), in her final return to her home state, fired a 228 (71-75-82), highlighted by tying her career-best round of 71 on the tournament’s opening 18 holes. Kicklighter finished in a tie for 19th place at the event. Sophomore Elizabeth Dotson (White Bluff, Tenn.) finished in a tie for 25th place with a 230 (76-79-75), while fellow second-year golfer Beth Felts (Chattanooga, Tenn.) finished in a tie for 38th place with a 235 (80-79-76).
The tournament will be the first of two tournaments in a one-week span for the Wildcats to close out the regular season. The Cats travel to Stockbridge, Ga., to participate in the John Kirk/Lady Panther Invitational on April 3-4.
