TULSA, Okla. (AP) — Former University of Tulsa and current Kentucky basketball coach Tubby Smith returned to Tulsa to accept the 2006 Legacy Award from the Greenwood Cultural Center on Friday.

Smith was selected for his career accomplishments, including a college basketball national championship at Kentucky, and his “earnest commitment to youth and the community,” said GCC board president Dwain Midget.

Smith led TU to back-to-back NCAA regional semifinals in 1994 and 1995.

He was presented the award during the second annual Legacy Dinner Thursday night at the cultural center.

Smith said he is proud to see his two sons and several of his former players have decided to follow him into coaching.

“That tells me we did some good things,” he said. “They saw us doing it the right way. It had an impact and inspired them to want to inspire others and teach others.”

While living in Tulsa, Smith and his wife, Donna, were active in the community and devoted time and resources to a variety of organizations and causes. In Kentucky, they have established a charitable foundation.

The Greenwood Cultural Center works to preserve African-American heritage and to promote positive images of the African-American community.
