LEXINGTON, Ky.? A one-hole playoff decided the fate of the 2006 Kentucky Women?s Open Championship today at Kearney Hill Golf Links in Lexington.
Five golfers connected to UK participated in the two-day event. Rising seniors Katie Johnson and Marissa Muir, were joined by Erin Faulkner, recent graduate and winner of the Marion Miley Invitational, as well as coach Stephanie Barker and assistant coach Jenny Throgmorton.
Faulkner finished the tournament seven-over par and in a tie for ninth place. Johnson?s score of 152 placed her in a tie for 12th, while Muir concluded the two-day event in a tie for 25th.
Throgmorton concluded day one with a share of third-place after a round of 74 to open the tournament. She followed that performance with a 76, to finish the tournament at six-over par good for a share of sixth place. Barker shot 153 and tied for 14th place.
Laura Anderson beat out Amanda Henry and Taryn Durham in a one-hole playoff to take the crown. University of Florida sophomore and Versailles native, Mallory Blackwelder held sole-possession of first place after day one, but her second round 76 kept her out of the playoff.
Kearney Hill Links is ranked in the Top 10 golf courses in Kentucky by Golf Digest and has played host to such events as the Senior PGA Tour, Celebrity Players Tour, and the 1998 Men?s U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship. The 2007 Women?s Amateur Public Links Championship will make a stop at Kearney Hill next summer.
