BEIJING, China ? Kentucky sophomore Gordon McKenzie (Queens, N.Y./Holy Cross) finished third in his heat in the 100 meter, missing an opportunity to qualify for the semifinal round in the 2006 IAAF Track and Field World Junior Championships early Tuesday morning at the Beijing Chaoyang Sports Fitness and Leisure Park in Beijing, China.
McKenzie finished third in his heat after posting a time of 10.74. The top two finishers in each heat plus the four fastest times advanced to the semifinals of the 100 m. Complete results of the World Junior Championships are available at http://www.iaaf.org/WJC06/index.html.
McKenzie will now prepare to participate in the 4×100 meter relay on Saturday, August 19. In the Road to Eugene ?08 meet last week in Eugene, Ore., McKenzie?s USA Red team won the 4×100 relay in 39.43 over USA Blue in 40.29.
McKenzie qualified for the World Junior Championships by finishing second at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Junior Championships in Indianapolis, Ind., in June. He finished second in the 100 m in that meet with a time of 10.30.
