BEIJING, China ? Kentucky sophomore Gordon McKenzie (Queens, N.Y./Holy Cross) will continue his competition in the 2006 IAAF Track and Field World Junior Championships late Friday evening. McKenzie will be part of the U.S. Junior National Team 4×100 meter relay team that competes at 11:55 p.m. ET at the Beijing Chaoyang Sports Fitness and Leisure Park in Beijing, China.
The top two teams in each of the three heats, plus the two fastest times advance to the finals. Earlier this week, McKenzie finished third in his heat in the 100 meter at the World Junior Championships after posting a time of 10.74. In the Road to Eugene ?08 meet on Aug. 8, in Eugene, Ore., McKenzie?s USA Red team won in 39.43 over USA Blue in 40.29 in its final tune-up before Friday night?s meet.
McKenzie is coming off an impressive freshman campaign at Kentucky, which was highlighted by a trip to the NCAA Championships in the 100. He recorded a personal- and team-best 10.29 (t-sixth all-time UK) at the NCAA Mideast Regionals to earn All-Region honors. He placed second in the 100 (10.30) and competed in the 200 at the Junior USA Track and Field Championships.
