The Kentucky football team held its second major scrimmage of preseason practice Saturday afternoon in warm, humid conditions at Commonwealth Stadium.

The Wildcats practiced for two hours, including a 30-minute ?thud? scrimmage (no tackling to the ground), followed by a one-hour full-contact scrimmage. There was a lot of situational work, including kicking game, two-minute drill, and goal line plays.

?We had a pretty good workout today,? Coach Rich Brooks said afterward. ?We did some live kicking for the first time today with kickoff return and coverage and on field goals. I was generally pleased with the kicking game. The great thing was that not one person was injured (during the scrimmage).?

On players who did not participate in the scrimmage ?

?We missed (tailback) Tony Dixon, who has had a headache, so we held him out. (Tailback) Rafael Little has had a temperature and was ill yesterday. We held him out and also (center) Matt McCutchan, who got a stinger in yesterday?s practice.? Brooks also noted that linebacker Joe Schuler, who has missed several days because of a concussion, returned to action today.

On the team?s placekicking ?

?Lones Seiber has been cleared to kick (after having hip surgery during the summer) but his groin has been bothering him because of the lack of activity. He obviously has a very strong leg but his timing is off. Brian Scott and J. J. Housley are really close. Housley made a couple of field goals today and Scott made three or four extra points.?

On the team?s punting ?

?Kris Kessler didn?t do as well today (as he had been) and Tim Masthay was better, so that competition continues.?

On the quarterbacks? performance in the scrimmage ?

?There was one error by Andre? Woodson and other than that they both (Woodson and Curtis Pulley) did some good things. Next Saturday?s scrimmage will be the last real opportunity.?

On the progress the quarterbacks have made ?

?Andre? seems more confident and in control of the offense. Curtis is more ready to run if things break down and he is throwing better. It?s going to be an interesting decision.?

On the tailback position with Little and Dixon out today ?

?Alfonso Smith and Antoine Brown did some good things and some things they need to do better.?

Brooks noted that players would continue to move up and down the depth chart based on the results of the scrimmage. He said that David Jones, who moved from cornerback to wide receiver this week, made a nice catch-and-run during the scrimmage and would likely stay at his new position for the immediate future.

Brooks also announced that sophomore offensive guard Micah Jones and junior wide receiver John Logan have been suspended for the opening game for violation of team rules.
