OXFORD, OH ? The Kentucky women?s soccer team (5-2-0) once again put the defensive clamps on the opposition as they recorded their third straight shutout, defeating the Miami (OH) Redhawks (3-4-0) 1-0.
Kentucky senior goalie Anne Ogundele has now recorded 270:00 consecutive scoreless minutes while earning her third straight shutout and her fourth of the season. She is now tied with Liz Butler for third on Kentucky?s all-time shutout list with 10.
?Anne knows that?s what we expect of her,? said head coach Warren Lipka. ?We expect her to not make any mistakes, make all the saves look routine and then come up with a big save for us every now and again.?
After playing through a scoreless first half, the Wildcats wasted no time in the second frame with Kelsey Fenix connecting on a header off a Kristin Kover corner kick just 1:01 into the second half. It was Fenix?s first goal of the season.
?Kelsey has been in that spot all season for us and she finally made good on her opportunity and got us a game winner,? said Lipka.
The teams fought to a 0-0 tie at the half, despite the Wildcats out shooting the RedHawks 7-4.
Each team had opportunities to break the ice on the scoreboard but neither was able to convert. Several times, the Cats had the ball deep in the Miami zone but was unable to come away with a goal. Ogundele continued her string of spectacular saves coming up with a diving save in the 21st minute and a knock-down save of a shot in the 35th minute.
?This was a tough, tough match,? said Lipka. ?Miami is a good team and they?re going to win a lot of games.?
The Wildcats turned up the defensive pressure in the second half, allowing only two shots while finishing the match with a 15-6 shot advantage as they improved their all-time record against the Redhawks to 3-0-0.
Kentucky will continue their road stretch as they head to Madison, Wisconsin this weekend to participate in the Wisconsin Invitational. UK will take on the UW-Milwaukee Panthers on Friday in a 5:30 p.m. match, followed by a Sunday 2:00 p.m. tussle with the host school Wisconsin Badgers.
