Wildcats Down EKU and Miami to Remain Perfect
LEXINGTON,
Ky. – The No. 20 Kentucky women’s tennis team opened its home dual match season
with a pair of wins over Miami (Ohio) and Eastern Kentucky on Tuesday. The
Wildcats improve to 3-0 on the young season.
“We
are in a great state of mind right now and the girls have worked really well
these first few matches,” said head coach Carlos Dradá. “We’ve played three
really good teams that are definitely tough opponents. Our players did a great
job being disciplined under pressure and were able to get some good wins.”
The
Wildcats quickly took the doubles point against Miami in its first match of the
day, blanking the RedHawks in both the singles and doubles competition.
Kentucky’s top-ranked doubles tandem of senior Aldila Sutjiadi and junior Mami
Adachi were the first to strike. Sophomore Justina Mikulskyte and junior Emily
Fanning clinched the point soon thereafter. On court two, sophomore Akvile
Paražinskaite and senior Morgan Chumney did not finish their match but led,
3-1.
In
singles action against the RedHawks, 12th-ranked Sutjiadi put the Wildcats up
2-0 by downing Miami’s Anzhelika Shapovalova in straight sets. Paražinskaite
then overcame a tough second-set tiebreak to take down Andreea Badileanu, 6-2,
7-6 (6).
UK
would see its match-winning point on court two as Adachi battled for a victory
over Hannah Shteyn, 6-0, 6-7 (2), 7-5.
Chumney
gave UK its final tally of 5-2 over the RedHawks with a 7-5, 6-1 triumph on
court six.
Kentucky
continued its success in doubles in the evening match vs. the Colonels.
Paražinskaite and Morgan Chumney came out on top with a 6-3 win in No. 2
doubles. Shortly after, Sutjiadi and Adachi overpowered EKU to take the 6-2
victory and clinch the point.
The
Wildcats did not drop a single set in singles against EKU, including a 6-0, 6-0
victory from No. 74 Paražinskaite to start things off. Mikulskyte followed
suit, winning on court four in straight sets to put the Wildcats up 3-0.
Adachi
once again provided the clinching point
UK needed to win the match with a 6-3, 6-1 defeat of Viktorija
Demcenkova.
Sutjiadi
was the last Wildcat to play out her match fully, earning a 6-3, 6-2 win on the
No. 1 singles. The remaining matches were played as eight-point pro sets, in
which Novakovic and Chumney each posted victories to complete the 7-0 sweep of
the match.
Kentucky
will return to action on Saturday, traveling to Atlanta to take on No. 25 UCLA
as part of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend’s Atlanta Regional. The Wildcats are
guaranteed two matches in the event, and will face either No. 11 Georgia Tech
or Penn on Sunday.
