Junior Kentucky guard Samantha Mahoney (Detroit) was named to the 2006-07 preseason All-Southeastern Conference team the league office announced Tuesday. For the second consecutive season Mahoney was selected to the conference?s preseason second team.

Mahoney played a key role in UK?s remarkable season of firsts last season, leading the Wildcats and ranking16th in the league in scoring with 11.9 points per game. She tallied double-figure point totals in 23-of-31 games, including nine of UK?s last 10 regular-season contests.

?I?m very pleased that Sam was selected as an All-SEC performer in the preseason polls,? UK Coach Mickie DeMoss said. ?She really did a great job as a leader for us last season and she has really shown a lot of improvement for us during the offseason. She took up boxing, really worked hard at her conditioning, and I have been very impressed with her in fall workouts.?

The preseason teams consist of a minimum of eight players on each squad, voted on by the head coaches of each SEC institution. This is the third-annual preseason All-SEC team for women?s basketball. The Wildcats have placed a member on a preseason all-SEC team in each of the three years.
