COLUMBUS, Ohio ? After claiming the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southeast Regional doubles championship, Kentucky?s Kim Coventry and Joelle Schwenk are poised to take on the rest of the nation at the ITA National Indoor Championships this weekend at the Racquet Club of Columbus.
Coventry and Schwenk earned an automatic bid into the 16-team field with their Wilson/ITA Southeast Regional title two weeks ago. There, the duo cruised through their five matches, including an upset of the nation?s top ranked team, Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long of North Carolina, en route to the crown.
In Thursdays opener, Coventry and Schwenk square off with Florida?s duo of Whitney Benik and Nina Suvak. The two pairs represent the entire SEC contingent in the field. A win would possibly set up a rematch between UK?s team and Anundsen and Long.
It is the second straight season Coventry and Schwenk have earned an invitation to the event. A year ago, the duo lost in the opening round to top-seeded Catrina and Christian Thompson of Notre Dame, also the top seed this year.
The best result for a UK doubles team at the National Indoor came in 1988 when Sonia Hahn and Tamaki Takagi were the runner up in the event.
