COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Kentucky doubles pair Joelle Schwenk and Kim Coventry continued their stellar run over the past month by knocking off the nation?s top ranked team for the second time in less than three weeks on Friday at the ITA National Indoor Championships.
Schwenk and Coventry advanced to the semifinals of the championships, hosted by the Racquet Club of Columbus, with a stunningly easy 8-2 victory over Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long of North Carolina. Long and Anundsen were finalists at the event last year.
The UK duo also beat the Tar Heel pair, ranked No. 1 in the preseason, en route to the ITA Southeast Regional championship two weeks ago.
In the semifinal, Schwenk and Coventry are slated to face TCU?s Ana Cetnik and Anna Sydorska, the 24th-ranked team in the country. Cetnik and Sydorska have knocked off the nation?s third-ranked team in their quest to the semifinal round.
Through two tournaments this year, Schwenk and Coventry have been a dominating force. They have won seven straight matches, including four top-50 opponents. In the seven wins, the pair has dropped only 26 games.
Schwenk and Coventry are looking to become just the second Wildcat team to reach the finals of the national indoor. In 1988, Sonia Hahn and Tamaki Takagi made a run to the final before falling.
