LEXINGTON ? The 20th-ranked Kentucky gymnastics team looks for its first win of the year this Friday at 7 p.m. when it hosts a quad meet against North Carolina, Maryland and 17th-ranked West Virginia at Memorial Coliseum.
The Wildcats are coming off a tough loss at Auburn last week, but showed improvement from their first meet of the year. A youthful squad, UK filled 11 of 24 line up spots with freshman on The Plains en route to scoring a 193.800.
Freshmen Hillary Ferguson and Emily Green stepped up while competing in three events each. The duo combined to post five scores of 9.7 or better in the meet. Ferguson adds an event this week and will compete in the all-around for the first time in her young career.
?We still aren?t where we want to be,? Kentucky coach Mo Mitchell said. ?But, we?ve had a great week of practice and I think our team is ready to put up a big score and really show our fans what we?re capable of.?
It is the second straight season Kentucky has been in a quad meet with UNC and Maryland. A year ago, James Madison filled out the quartet in Chapel Hill, N.C., and the Wildcats went on to topple all three. Krystle Cook won the bars title and finished second in the all-around while Kristen O?Shields and Heather Hite tied for the beam crown.
Fans are encouraged to wear pink as Kentucky’s squad is supporting breast cancer with the meet.
