LEXINGTON, Ky.?Sophomore Bruno Agostinelli was named the Southeastern Conference men?s tennis player of the week for the period Feb. 12-19, as announced today by the league offices.
The sophomore used a 2-0 week in singles action that included an upset of the nation?s top ranked player in Ohio State?s Steve Moneke, in the No. 34 Wildcats? 6-1, loss to No. 2 Ohio State.
Ohio State entered the match with an unblemished record at 6-0, and had yet to yield even a single point to any of its opponents.
The Wildcat took the first set 6-4, before Moneke fired back with a 6-4 win of his own. Agostinelli prevailed 6-3 to earn the lone point for the Cats in their 6-1 loss. The loss was just the fifth of the year for Moneke.
“We really felt like this was the first time that Bruno was back playing at 100 percent after his injury,” said Coach Dennis Emery after his No. 1 singles player defeated Moneke on Monday. “It was a great win for him to defeat the number one guy in the nation.”
The Niagara Falls, Canada, native earned his second win of the season on Saturday in a 5-1 Wildcat victory over Butler. Agostinelli defeated James Low in three sets, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3.
Agostinelli?s record evens at 2-2 on the season, after he began the season with a torn tendon in his foot.
Kentucky (4-3, 0-0) returns to action Thursday with a match against Indiana. The Blue and White will welcome the Hoosiers at 5 p.m. EST, at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Center.
