LEXINGTON ? The 23rd-ranked Kentucky women?s tennis team kept up its torrid start to the 2007 season, beating Arkansas, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Boone Tennis Center.
The win was UK?s sixth straight and improved the Wildcats to 12-1 on the year. It?s the best start for the team in the past 20 years. The current streak has taken place largely in Southeastern Conference play as Kentucky is now a perfect 4-0 in the league, tied for first place with Vanderbilt and Georgia. The Wildcats also stretched their home win streak to 11 matches dating back to last year.
It didn?t take long for UK to score the victory Sunday, sweeping the doubles point before securing three straight-set wins in singles. On court three, freshmen Christine Johnston and Whitney Spencer got things going with an 8-3 victory over Rachel Wilhelm and Melissa Hoffmeister.
Carolina Escamilla and Sarah Woestmann clinched the point with their 8-1 win at No. 2 over Audrey Bordeleau and Ela Kaluder. Second-ranked Kim Coventry and Joelle Schwenk made it a clean sweep with a win on No. 1. That duo is now 18-3 on the year.
Kentucky has won the doubles point in 11 of 13 matches and its tandems are 30-9 overall in dual action.
In singles, Schwenk, Woestmann and Escamilla made quick work of their foes to seal the match before play even began at Nos. 5 and 6. On court two, Schwenk won for the 15th time in her last 16 matches, scoring a 6-4, 6-3 win over Franco to clinch the match for Kentucky.
Escamilla was off first at No. 4 after a dominating 6-2, 6-2 performance over Bordeleau. The win snapped her personal five-game skid. Woestmann dispatched of Nanar Airapetian on court three, 6-3, 6-1 to improve to 12-1 in her career. She has won 13 sets this season at one or love.
