HONOLULU — The 17th-ranked Kentucky women’s tennis team continued its hot streak by downing Hawaii, 6-0, Saturday afternoon to run its win streak to seven.
The win improved UK to 13-1 on the year, the best start for the team in the last 20 years.
The Wildcats have been on the islands for nearly a week as its UK’s spring break. Originally, the match was scheduled for Friday, but inclement weather pushed it back a day. With the weather still threatening Saturday, the teams decided to play singles first, and Kentucky pulled off a clean sweep.
“I am thrilled that we were able to finish this week in a high note,” Kentucky head coach Carlos Drada said. “We played a good match and are now well prepared for the rest of our season”
For the second time this year, the Wildcats competed without top player Kim Coventry. However, it didn’t matter as Joelle Schwenk filled her No. 1 spot with a 6-1, 6-3 win. It was her 16th win in her last 17 games.
At No. 2, Sarah Woestmann, improved to 13-1 overall with an easy 6-3, 6-0 victory. She’s now won 14 sets this year at one or love.
Freshmen Whitney Spencer and Christine Johnston each picked up straight-set wins. Spencer coasted past Julia Sardbion, 6-0, 6-0. Johnston took down Flo Waskso, 6-3, 6-4.
On court four, sophomore Jessica Giuggioli beat Sami Cappella, 6-2, 6-2. Fellow sophomore Carolina Escamilla scored a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win over Chloe Bihag for the final margin.
The Wildcats return to action next weekend against Mississippi State and Ole Miss.
