LEXINGTON ? After running its winning streak to seven and extending the program?s best start in more than 20 years, the Kentucky women?s tennis team is holding down the No. 22 position in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, released Tuesday.
Despite a 13-1 overall record and a 4-0 mark in the Southeastern Conference, UK dropped five spots in the ranking from its previous spot. Since the previous release, the Wildcats played just one match, a 6-0 road win over unranked Hawaii. The ITA uses a computer formula that assigns points to quality wins and ranks its teams.
The Wildcats doubles tandem of Joelle Schwenk and Kim Coventry suffered a three-spot drop in the rankings, but are still ranked No. 5 in the nation. The pair has seven wins over ranked foes this year, including three teams currently ranked in the top 12.
Schwenk also earned singles recognition, coming in at No. 122 nationally. She has pocketed a trio of victories over current ranked players.
Coventry and Schwenk lead Kentucky back into battle this weekend against No. 65 Mississippi State on Friday afternoon before hosting Ole Miss Sunday.
