ATHENS, Ga. – Kim Coventry and Joelle Schwenk were ousted from NCAA Doubles Championships in the first round Thursday, falling to Yasmin Schnack and Riza Zalameda of UCLA, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.
The pair was stellar all season long, winning the ITA Southeast Regional and advancing to the semifinals of the National Indoor Championships in earning a No. 5-8 seed in the draw, but were upset by the Bruin duo.
It is the second time in three years Coventry and Schwenk have been knocked out in the first round. Last year, Coventry moved onto the second round before falling with partner Carolina Escamilla.
Losing at the hands of Zalameda marked the second time Coventry has been eliminated by her in NCAA play. Last season, Zalameda bounced Coventry from the NCAA Singles Championships in the second round.
Coventry and Schwenk earned All-America honors by gaining a top eight national seed for the draw, becoming the ninth and 10th All-Americans in UK history.
Schnack and Zalameda advance to face Ana Majacika and Federica van Adrichem of Clemson – a pair Coventry and Schwenk already defeated this year – in the round of 16.
