LEXINGTON, Ky. ? The University of Kentucky women?s cross country team continued their strong start to the season, winning their second straight meet at the Old Timers Classic in Bowling Green, Ky. Saturday. The UK men ran impressively finishing second in their five-mile run at Western Kentucky?s Kereiakes Park.
Junior Jessica Ortman paced the women?s squad again in their 5K race finishing second overall with a time of 17:38. Ortman was the first of five runners in the top-10 for the Cats who were separated by only 20 seconds. Senior Lavera Morris (6th ? 17:52) was immediately followed by her teammates at the finish line, freshman Leah Ryan (7th ? 17:54) and junior Andrea Halasek (8th ? 17:57). Junior Taylor Miller (17:58) rounded out the scoring, racing to 10th place overall. Junior Jenna Ortman (18:14) and freshman Katharine Peterson (18:22) finished 13th and 15th respectively, for the Cats.
The UK men were led by junior Bruce Hordusky who finished third overall at a mark of 25:18 over the 5-mile course. Hordusky again shattered his time at an event one year later, running over one minute and a half faster this time around the course. Senior Andre? Silva finished just a few spots behind at sixth with a time of 25:33. The men?s squad had the most runners among the field finish in the top-20 with six overall. Junior Chris Long (11th ? 25:59), led Wildcat finishers in the second-10, while three new Cats finished close behind in junior transfer Will Rover (15th ? 26:12), and freshmen Adam Henken (16th ? 26:19) and Zac Noel (17th ? 26:20). The men fell short of Eastern Kentucky for the championship.
Kentucky returns to action in two weeks when it travels west on I-64 to race in the Greater Louisville Classic.
