Kate Hughes knocked home a header with :03 left in the second overtime that lifted the Kentucky women?s soccer team (5-0-1) to a 2-1 double-overtime victory over the Marshall Thundering Herd (2-4-0).
Knotted at 1-1 late in the second overtime, it looked as if the Wildcats were going to notch their second tie of the season. However, a late foul on the Thundering Herd gave the Wildcats a free kick on the right side of the goal near the touch line. Julie Hull took the kick and sent a ball back post where Kate Hughes got a solid head on the ball and put it past Marshall goalie Liz Orton for the game-winner. It was Hughes? second goal of the season.
?I didn?t think we had a great day,? said Kentucky head coach Warren Lipka. ?I certainly don?t want to take anything away from Marshall; they played well and fought hard. I wasn?t happy with the performance, but I am happy with the result.?
The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute on a beautifully played ball by Nicola Holdsworth. Megan Jones sent a ball to the top of the 18-yard box where Holdsworth brought it down with her chest and got a solid shot off for her second goal of the season and the UK lead.
Marshall answered in the 70th minute when Kassie Hollman took a pass from Erin Johnson and knocked it passed UK freshman goalie Sydney Hiance for her second goal of the season.
The Wildcats out shot the Thundering Herd 23-13, led for the fourth time this season by freshman Laura Novikoff with five.
Hiance recorded her first start of the season and collected her first win, allowing just one goal in 110 minutes, while recording six saves.
UK returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 20 when they host Morehead State in a 7:00 p.m. match. Live stats will be available on UKathletics.com.
