Senior wide receiver Keenan Burton has been named a finalist for the Fred Biletnikoff Award, which goes to the top pass receiver in college football.
Burton (Louisville, Ky.) is one of 12 finalists for the award, which will be announced on the ESPN College Football Awards Show on Dec. 6. The award is coordinated by the Tallahassee (Fla.) Quarterback Club and named for Biletnikoff, an All-American at Florida State and NFL Hall of Fame receiver for the Oakland Raiders.
Despite playing with a sprained ankle since the second game of the season, and later incurring a strained knee, Burton has caught 44 passes for 544 yards and six touchdowns. He topped the 100-yard mark twice this season and had two TD receptions in Kentucky?s upset win at Arkansas.
For his career, Burton ranks second in school history in touchdown catches (22), third in receiving yards (2,179), and fourth in total receptions (167).
Tamme a Finalist for the Wuerffel Trophy: Senior tight end Jacob Tamme has been named a finalist for the Danny Wuerffel Trophy, as announced by the All Sports Association of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.
The award, nicknamed the ?Humanitarian Heisman? by a Florida sportswriter, is given to the college football player who best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement. Tamme excels in all three areas:
Tamme has been very active in community service. He has been the Outreach Chairman for the UK football team for three years and his numerous service efforts earned him a place on the 2006 National Good Works Team, one of only 11 players honored by the American Football Coaches Association.
He needed only three years to complete his bachelor?s degree in integrated strategic communications. Tamme is in his second year of his master?s in business administration. He is one of only 15 players ? from across all levels of college football ? to receive the 2007 Scholar-Athlete Award from the National Football Foundation. He is now a finalist for the Draddy Trophy, given to the nation?s top scholar-athlete.
On the playing field, he has 34 receptions for 350 yards and four touchdowns this season. He was named first-team All-Southeastern Conference in 2006. His career totals feature 111 catches for 1,148 yards and nine TDs. He is among the top eight pass catchers in school history and is nearing James Whalen?s career record for most receptions by a tight end.
The award is named after Danny Wuerffel, former Heisman Trophy winner who led the Florida Gators to the 1996 national championship and played six years in the National Football League. He has received national recognition for his humanitarian and community service efforts with Desire Street Ministries in New Orleans.
Masthay, Tamme Named to Academic All-District Team; Advance to National Ballot for Academic All-America: Punter Tim Masthay and tight end Jacob Tamme have been voted to the Academic All-District IV Team by the College Sports Information Directors (CoSIDA).
CoSIDA District IV is comprised of universities in the states of Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama. Masthay and Tamme now advance to the national ballot for Academic All-America.
Masthay, a junior from Murray, Ky., has a 3.72 grade-point average with a major in Economics. A three-year starter, he is having the best season of his career with a 41.9-yard punting average.
Tamme completed his bachelor?s degree in Integrated Strategic Communications with a 3.82 GPA. He is now in his second year of study for his Master?s in Business Administration and has a 3.83 graduate school GPA.
