LEXINGTON, Ky. ? Kentucky sophomores Sarah Rumely (New Palestine, Ind.) and BriAnne Sauer (Louisville, Ky.) each have been named to the 2007 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA)/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District second team for their successes on the court and in the classroom, it was announced Thursday.
?We are very excited for Sarah and BriAnne to receive these honors,? UK head coach Craig Skinner said. ?They are very committed as both students and athletes, and we are fortunate to have them as a part of our volleyball family.?
Rumely, a 5-foot-11 setter, ranks first on the team and second in the Southeastern Conference in assists with 12.29 dishes per game. She also is tied for the team lead in service aces with 35 and is third on the squad with a .291 hitting percentage.
Rumely, who has started each of the team?s 27 matches and 105 games, directs a Kentucky offense that ranks second in the league in hitting percentage with a .253 team clip. She recorded the 10th triple-double by an SEC player this season last Sunday vs. Ole Miss.
The 2006 SEC Freshman of the Year, Rumely has 2,778 career assists, which ranks seventh all-time in UK annals. Her 1,488 dishes last season ranked sixth all-time on UK?s single-season assists list and she already has 1,290 assists this season.
Rumely, who was named to the SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll last season, has accumulated an impressive 3.83 GPA in exercise science. She is the daughter of Bill and Elyse Rumely, of New Palestine, Ind.
Sauer, a 5-foot-6 defensive specialist, has been the team?s starting libero in each of the past seven matches. Since being inserted into the lineup as the team?s libero on Oct. 12 vs. Ole Miss, Sauer has shined, averaging a team-leading 4.75 digs per game and 21.4 digs per match. She recorded a career-high 26 digs in a 3-1 win against Georgia on Oct. 28.
In league matches only, Sauer ranks 10th in the SEC with 3.73 digs per game. For the year, she is second on the team in digs with 3.27 scoops per game. Sauer, who has compiled a 3.46 cumulative GPA, is the daughter of Chris and Melinda Sauer, of Louisville, Ky.
Kentucky is a member of District 4, which covers the states of Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee.
