LEXINGTON, Ky. ? Senior Kentucky defensive specialist Kathleen Bowler (Naperville, Ill.) was named to the Southeastern Conference Community Service Team for the second consecutive year, the league office in Birmingham, Ala., announced.
The SEC sponsors Community Service Teams for each of its 20 league-sponsored sports. For the fifth consecutive year, the SEC has looked to highlight a volleyball athlete from each of the conference?s 11 members who gives back to her community through superior service efforts.
Bowler has volunteered and mentored children at the UK?s Children?s Hospital and has helped raise money for Special Olympics Bowling in Kentucky with the Polar Bear Plunge. Bowler joined her teammates in helping build a house for Habitat for Humanity and has participated as an instructor for various volleyball clinics, including the team?s annual Girl Scout Clinic.
Bowler, who is a member of UK?s prestigious Frank G. Ham Society of Character, has been featured in the UK College of Education Alumni magazine for her commitment to education, athletics and community service. Bowler has also tutored kids at the Village Branch Library and worked UK?s Dance Blue dance-off this past year. Bowler is a captain of the 2007 volleyball squad.
In past years, Bowler has worked as a teacher?s assistant for third-grade science experiments as part of Johnson Elementary School?s Mentoring program in Lexington. She has worked at the St. Vincent Care Shelter, organizing canned goods and other household necessities for a food drive, in addition to cleaning the warehouse and painting the walls.
Bowler has also volunteered at Special Olympics Bowling and at the UK Children?s Hospital. She has served as a bell-ringer during the Salvation Army?s Red Kettle Campaign and worked with the UK Athletics Food Drive.
