LEXINGTON, Ky. ? The UK women?s tennis team bounced back from their loss against Indiana to win matches against Middle Tennessee, 6-1, and East Tennessee, 6-1 at home Saturday in the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex.
The Cats started their morning against Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders. Kentucky claimed the doubles point through No. 20 ranked pair, Christine Johnston and Carolina Escamilla, winning 8-1, and doubles team Megan Broderick and Sarah Woestmann with an 8-2 decision.
Freshman Alaina Trgovich started her first match at No.1 singles, remaining undefeated for the season in singles play, with a 6-0, 6-1 result. Johnston also continued her domination in singles while Broderick secured the fourth point for Kentucky against MTSU, winning the first match of the day.
Kentucky played the second match with East Tennessee State, and began with more success in doubles. Johnston and Escamilla closed out their match against ETSU?s Yevgeniya Stupak and Olya Batsula 8-4. Following close behind was UK?s Broderick and Woestmann, finishing out the set 8-3 against the Buc?s Tara Byrne and Tara Sheets.
In singles play, No. 69 Sarah Woestmann beat out the Buc?s Andra Voinea 6-1, 6-1. Johnston and Trgovich continued their winning streaks against East Tennessee?s Stupak 6-3, 6-2, and Tara Byrne 6-1, 4-6, 6-0, respectively, extending their season?s singles records to 7-0. Johnston?s win gained the fourth point for Kentucky, ensuring the team?s undefeated record at home.
?The team started with adversity at the very beginning today,? said Head Coach Carlos Drada. ?But we were able to bounce back and play with a lot of discipline throughout both matches.?
The Kentucky Wildcats? next two matches will be on the road against No. 16 Clemson and No. 4 Georgia Tech. The match against Clemson is slated for Feb. 16 and then the Cats head to Georgia Tech, Feb. 17 at noon (ET).
