LEXINGTON, Ky. ? UK?s No. 15 women?s tennis team lost Sunday?s home match against No. 30 Arkansas. The Razorbacks defeated the Cats 4-3 in the third set of number six singles.
In a tight fight for doubles, Arkansas took the point. After the Razorbacks won court three, the Cats rallied on courts one and two. The No. 50 Kentucky duo of Carolina Escamilla and Megan Broderick traded point for point with Arkansas?s No. 21 pair, Aurelija Miseviciute and Ela Kaluder, but fell, 9-7. Finishing out doubles action were Kentucky?s Christine Johnston and Alaina Trgovich on court two. The pair took the match down to the last game against Razorback?s Maryori Franco and Nanar Airapetian. Arkansas took all three courts with an 8-6 win on court two.
During singles, Kentucky?s No. 77 Sarah Woestmann played court one against No. 1 Miseviciute. Arkansas gained the second point of the day by defeating Woestmann, 6-1, 6-2. UK?s Johnston put Kentucky on the scoreboard after beating Razorback Franco, 6-4, 6-4. Johnston now holds a singles record of 14-1.
Courts two and three battled through three sets before securing points. Junior Escamilla played Hog Anouk Tigu on court three. In a three set match, Escamilla brought it to a close by defeating Tigu, 6-3, 1-6, 6-2. Broderick occupied the two?s position and won the first set, 7-5, against Arkansas?s Ela Kaluder. After dropping the second set, 3-6, Broderick rallied back to with a 6-3 victory. The third point scored by Broderick tied the match between the Wildcats and Arkansas.
The last point of day was earned in the third set on the sixth court. Freshman Lauren Meier represented Kentucky while Delia Damaschin played for Arkansas. UK took the first set 6-4 but the Hogs won the second and third sets, 6-3, 6-2, respectively. The Razorback win secured the fourth and winning point of the day.
Kentucky?s next match is scheduled with unranked Alabama on March 21 in Lexington, Ky. It will be held in the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex at 1 p.m.
