LEXINGTON, KY ? The UK women?s soccer team (2-1-2) posted a 1-0 win over the Charlotte 49ers in the Cats? spring finale on Sunday at the UK Soccer Complex.
In a match the coaching staff described as a great game that had the feel of real fall match to it, Kentucky scratched early and then relied on its patented stingy defense to pull out the victory.
In the 15th minute, Laura Novikoff floated a shot just over the keeper?s hands from the top of the box to give Kentucky a 1-0 lead. The rest of the game was battle of attrition in the midfield. However, the 49ers showed a final burst in the last 20 minutes, pressing the UK defense hard, but the Kentucky back line fought off the charges and held on for the win.
Wildcat goalie Sydney Hiance was in the net for the entire game, notching the shutout.
Kentucky opens the 2008 fall season on Thursday, Aug. 21 when they host 11th ranked Texas at the UK Soccer Complex.
