The University of Kentucky men?s golf team gained five spots finishing the second round in a tie for seventh place at the NCAA West Regionals in Bremerton, Wash. at the Gold Mountain Golf Club.
Southern California, 574 (291-283), moved into first spot after shooting five-under par in the second round.
The Wildcats posted a second-round team score of 291 to bring their two-day total to 593 (302-291), 19 strokes behind the Trojans. UK is tied for seventh along with Pepperdine (292-301) and Stanford (296-297).
?It was great to see all of our guys improve on their scores from yesterday,? coach Brian Craig said. ?We still have a lot of work left to do to finish in the top 10 tomorrow to move on to the NCAA Championships in Indiana.?
Oregon ranks second at 579 (289-290), followed by Clemson (295-285). UCLA (291-294) and Washington round out the top five each tied for fourth with a total of 585.
Sophomore Alex Volpenhein (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) knocked in five birdies for a second-round 73, Volpenhein is now tied for 27th overall with senior Cale Barr (Versailles, Ky.). Barr shot a one-over par for a total score of 147 (74-73).
Brian Belden (Emmaus, Pa.) carded a 72 in the second round improving his first-round score by five strokes and is now tied for 42nd with a total of 149, while junior Andy Winings (Brownsburg, Ind.) ranks tied for 51st with a two-round total of 150 (77-73).
Senior Brad Doster (Winter park, Fla.) rounds out the scoring for the Wildcats carding a two-round total of 159 (83-76) for a tie in 126th.
The three-day event wraps up Saturday, May 17, with the final 18 holes. The Cats will tee off beginning at 3:12 p.m. EST. Live stats can be viewed on ukathletics.com.
