Click for full-size image OMAHA, Neb.?Rising junior swimmer Eric McGinnis clocked a personal-best time Friday morning in the preliminary heats of the 50-meter freestyle at the US Olympic Trials in Omaha. McGinnis finished in 33rd place overall after touching the wall in a time of 22.93.
McGinnis entered the meet with a top time of 23.03, and today on one of the biggest stages in all of competitive swimming the UK athlete tallied a better clip in the sprint freestyle. Earlier in the week he tied for 82nd in the 100-meter freestyle. Today?s impressive swim wraps up the 2008 Trials for McGinnis who returns to Kentucky with two seasons of eligibility. McGinnis earned points for the Blue and White in both sprint freestyle races at the 2008 SEC Championships and he became an All-America honorable mention during his sophomore campaign on two relays.
Rising junior Alex Forbes also competed in the 50-free and placed in a tie for 83rd in the event. Forbes tapped in with a time of 23.45 in his only event in the competition. He too will return to Lexington with two more seasons to compete for the Blue and White.
Cullen Jones placed first overall in the event with a time of 21.59.
Saturday will wrap up preliminary competition for Wildcat swimmers. Former swimmers Heather and Jenny Bradford will be among the field in the women?s 50-free swim tomorrow.
