DAYTON, Ohio. — In its first exhibition game of the season, the Kentucky men’s soccer team got goals from senior midfielder Masumi Turnbull and freshman forward Marco dos Santos in a 3-2 loss to the Dayton Flyers, on Monday evening at Baujan Field.

“We got exactly what we needed out of tonight’s game,” head coach Ian Collins said. “We played 24 players and this was an opportunity for us look at individual players and also how players responded to a game after a tough few days of training. We had some really good individual performances and found the areas that we were most exposed in that we will be working on in the next few days of training. A good foundation has been laid and now we need to tighten everything up and bring things up to game speed”

With a 2-2 tie heading into the final two minutes of the game, Kentucky allowed a game-winning goal in the 88th minute, giving the Wildcats an exhibition defeat. Dayton’s Simeon Zapryanov scored the game-winner with an unassisted goal from 35 yards out.

Dayton got on the board late in the first half, getting a goal in the 37th minute from Florian DeCamps, with Ryan Hartman notching the assist.

Kentucky answered with the game-tying goal in the 38th as Turnbull, a coaches pick for the Conference USA Preseason Team, scored on an assist from senior midfielder Bingy Lara.

In the 48th minute, Dayton’s Luke Baker took passes from Alex Frenz and Ryan Hartman and gave the Flyers a 2-1 lead.

Dos Santos, a freshman forward from Brazil, evened up the game in the 64th minute. dos Santos, took a cross from Chad Hagerty and netted his first goal in a Wildcat uniform.

Williams, UK’s three-year starter in goal, totaled three saves in his 59 minutes of work.

Kentucky finishes its preseason exhibition schedule with a home match vs. West Virginia on August 23 at 7 p.m. ET at the UK Soccer Complex.
