LEXINGTON, Ky. — Highlighted by a personal best from junior Leslie Angeli, the Kentucky rifle team posted a 4649-4639 win over the West Virginia Mountaineers, on Saturday afternoon at UK’s Barker Hall.
Angeli posted a 589 in air rifle, second-best on the team and good for a personal high. Freshman shooter Megan English tallied a match-high 590 in air rifle, while Tom Csenge totaled a 578 in smallbore and a 587 in air rifle. Senior Andrew Roland tallied a 579 in smallbore, Ethan Settlemires posted a 582 in air gun and Ashley Jackson tallied a 587 in air rifle to pace the Wildcats starting lineup.
“It is always good to come away with a win,” head coach Harry Mullins said. “Our smallbore numbers are still down from where we wanted them to be but if we keep working at it, we will have some good results soon. Our air rifle was down a little from where it has been in the past few matches, but we are getting some score up.
“Leslie had a personal best in air rifle with a 589, and I was really proud of the way she held together the whole match. For that matter the whole team held up somewhat under that pressure that they placed themselves under today.”
On the white squad, Jen Pason tallied a 574 in smallbore and a 577 in air rifle, while Roland posted a 586 in air rifle.
“West Virginia is a very talented team and I think that they will post some big numbers in the near future,” Mullins said. “With both teams being equally matched, this was a great match for both schools. We will see each other again in the conference championships and the NCAA’s if we make it. I am sure this is just the first of many nail bitters to come for these two teams.”
Kentucky closes out the fall season, traveling to Dallas to face TCU on Nov. 22.
