LEXINGTON, Ky. – University of Kentucky women’s basketball player Carly Ormerod (Louisville, Ky.) has been named the Southeastern Conference Community Service Player of the Week, it was announced Tuesday. The SEC sponsors a Community Service Team for all 20 league sponsored sports. This is the 11th year for the team in men’s and women’s basketball. The team recognizes the accomplishments of student-athletes in the community and in the classroom.

Ormerod, a senior point guard, has been very active in the “Cats That Care” service program during her four years as a Wildcat. She has volunteered at Kentucky’s Children’s Hospital – Pediatric Clinic, coordinated UK Athletics’ canned food drive, helped organize a food drive to benefit God’s Pantry, volunteered at a local elementary school’s Jog- A-Thon, volunteered as a bell-ringer for the Salvation Army, and been a frequent visitor to area hospitals. She currently participates in Cats Cultivating Character, where student-athletes teach character lessons once a month to third grade students at a local elementary school. She also serves as president of SAAC (Student Athlete Advisory Committee) at UK for the second consecutive year.

Ormerod graduated Cum Laude with a degree in biology in May of 2008, an entire year ahead of schedule. She is working on a second degree in human nutrition with plans to enter physician’s assistant school after basketball. She is a three-time SEC Academic Honor Roll selection and was an SEC All-Freshman Team pick in 2005-06. Because of her dedication on and off the court, she was named to UK’s Frank Ham Society of Character last year, an honor recognizing student-athletes for their exceptional commitment to academic excellence, athletic participation, and personal development, being a role model, and career preparation. It’s the highest honor the UK Athletics Department bestows on its student-athletes.
