BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Freshman swimmer Morne’ Boshoff was named the SEC Freshman of the Week as announced by the league office Tuesday. Boshoff enjoyed an outstanding meet against Louisville on Saturday, capturing wins in both of the distance freestyle events.
The first-year swimmer scored wins in the 500- and 1000-free events with times of 4:23.86 and 9:08.54, respectively. Both clips are career-best times, and the 500-free time is good for fifth place all-time at UK and is an NCAA `B’ time standard. Additionally, it ranks as the 12th fastest time in the SEC this season.
His 1000-free time pushes his name into the No. 2 slot on UK’s all-time chart and ranks as the second fastest time in the conference during the 2008-09 season.
This is the first such honor of the freshman’s career and the second weekly honor for the Kentucky swimming and diving program this season. Sophomore diver Jessie Snowden earned SEC Diver of the Week honors two weeks ago.
Boshoff and the Wildcats return to action on Saturday when they travel to face Cincinnati in the final dual meet of the year. The meet is slated to begin at noon.
