LEXINGTON, Ky. –
For the second time this weekend, freshman Justin Austin broke his 200 meter dash record with a time of 20.99 at the 2009 Southeastern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships at E.J. Nutter Field House on Sunday. Both Kentucky squads placed seventh overall at the conference championships.
Austin’s mark places him in a tie for fourth all-time at UK with teammate Jose Acevedo in the event. The freshman also picked up a provisional mark with his personal-best finish. The Milwaukee, Wis., native also earned points for the Cats in the 60m dash, finishing the race in 6.73 for another provisional mark. Austin ended the evening as a member of the men’s 4x400m relay team that ran a season-best time of 3:06.78. The relay time ranks fourth all-time at UK and is also good for an NCAA mark.
Junior Rondel Sorrillo, senior Brandon Austin and Acevedo rounded out the third-place relay squad.
Acevedo moved up in the UK record books in the 400m dash. The senior ran a personal-best time of 46.85 to place third overall. The mark earned Acevedo a provisional mark and moved him into fifth-place all-time at UK. The Venezuela native scored for the Cats in the 200m dash, placing seventh at a clip of 21.14 – also good for an NCAA mark.
Sorrillo tried to improve upon his automatic mark in the 60m prelims but came up just short, placing fourth in the event at 6.66 and earning a provisional.
