LEXINGTON, Ky. – Two Kentucky track and field athletes earned All-America honors for their performances at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships last weekend the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced early this week. Sprinter Rondel Sorrillo collected two accolades for the 60m and 200m dashes while thrower Chase Madison claimed the distinction in the shot put.
Sorrillo, a 2008 Olympian who represented Trinidad and Tobago in the 200m dash, placed third nationally in the event on the first day of competition at the NCAA Championships last weekend to earn his first honor. The junior made good on his first career NCAA final appearance, running his personal-best time as a Wildcat of 20.72 to break the 15-year-old UK varsity 200m dash record of 20.73 set by Clyde Rudolph in 1994.
On the final day of competition, Sorrillo bolted out of the blocks in lane one of the 60m dash final to place fifth in the country with a time of 6.63, a 0.02 second improvement over his preliminary time on Friday. His second top-five finish of the weekend earned the Wildcat an additional honor.
The All-America honors were the first of Sorrillo’s career as a Wildcat.
Senior Chase Madison finished sixth overall in the men’s shot put with a personal-best indoor throw of 62-1 in his final attempt to move up two spots in the final standings during the first day of competition. The mark improves Madison’s seventh-best distance all-time at UK.
The All-America honor is the second of Madison’s career after achieving Outdoor All-America status in the discus during his 2006 season at Iowa State.
ESPN2 will air a 90-minute highlight show of the NCAA Championships on Mar. 23 at 2:30 p.m. ET.
