RICHMOND, Va. — After posting a two-over par 144 through the second round of competition, Kentucky senior Sara Hurwitch sits in a tie for third place at the Virginia Women’s Stroke Play Championship, held at Meadowbrook Country Club.

Hurwitch, a native of Sterling, Va., finished the opening round of the tournament in first place with a two-under par 69. Posting birdies on holes three and six, Hurwitch was bogey free and hit 12 greens in regulation during the first round.

Wednesday, Hurwitch finished the second round four-over par. She carded two birdies on the day and finished with six bogies.

The current leader, Lauren Greenlief, sits at a two-under par, while second place golfer Kristen Simpson is even. Hurwitch shares third place with Amanda Steinhagen.

Thursday, the tournament’s final round, Hurwitch tees off at 9:48 a.m. ET in the second-last group.

The 2007 champion of the Virginia Women’s Stroke Play Championship, Hurwitch looks to reclaim her title from Simpson, the 2008 winner. In 2008, Simpson defeated Hurwitch on the second hole of a playoff at Mount Vernon Country Club in Alexandria, Va.

Last season for the Wildcats, Hurwitch competed in eight tournaments and finished with a 78.3 stroke average. A transfer from Central Florida, the 2008-2009 season was her first with Kentucky.
