LEXINGTON, Ky – The 2009-10 Kentucky women’s basketball team debuted their skills for over 200 fans Saturday morning in the third annual “UK Hoops Fan Day” in Memorial Coliseum. The Wildcats defeated the Blue Bombers, the team’s male practice squad, 49-43 in three 10-minute periods.
“I thought we did a lot of good things,” UK Hoops Coach Matthew Mitchell said. “We had some really good moments defensively and I thought our players really tried to apply what we’ve been working on in practice in this game-like atmosphere. We definitely have room for improvement but overall I was pleased with our effort and intensity.”
Junior All-Southeastern Conference selection Victoria Dunlap (Nashville, Tenn.) and sophomore guard Keyla Snowden (Lexington, Ky.) led the Cats’ offensive effort with 12 points each. Dunlap was 5-of-10 from the field and added a team-high nine rebounds. Snowden, who ranked sixth nationally in three-point field goal average as a freshman at Akron, continued her hot shooting by netting 2-of-4 from beyond the arc. Junior point guard Amber Smith (Winter Haven, Fla.), contributed seven points and three assists while senior guard Amani Franklin (Stone Mountain, Ga) also added seven points. Georgetown, Ky., native and sophomore guard Rebecca Gray came off the bench and totaled five points and three assists.
The Wildcats return to action Monday, Nov. 9 for their first exhibition game against Bellarmine University. Game time is 7 p.m. ET in Memorial Coliseum. Admission is free of charge.
