LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky women’s basketball team looks to continue its winning ways when it plays host to Butler University Sunday, Nov. 15 at 1 p.m. EST. The game will be broadcast live on the Big Blue Sports Network (radio and TV) and Fox Sports South.
UK (1-0) is coming off a 92-58 win over first-time opponent Boston University on Friday morning. UK and Boston kicked off the 2009-10 season with the nation’s first Division I regular season game. The 92 points marked the best offensive output for the Wildcats scoring 105 points on Dec. 22, 2005. The 34-point margin of victory was the most since defeating Memphis by 35 (86-51) on Dec. 30, 2006.
“We have a quick turnaround here in that we have just one day to prepare for Butler,” UK Hoops Coach Matthew Mitchell said. “I thought we played with a lot of passion and intensity on Friday and I hope we can carry that tempo into Sunday’s game. We still have a lot of things to improve on and we need to be mentally focused for a tough Butler team. They return three of their starters from a good team last year and they will come in here ready to play.”
Junior All-Southeastern Conference selection Victoria Dunlap (Nashville, Tenn.) led all scorers and rebounders in UK season opener with 24 points, 12 rebounds and a career-high tying five steals. It marked her 14th career double-double and her sixth career game with 20-plus points. Three other players scored in double-figures. Juniors Carly Morrow (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Amber Smith (Winter Haven, Fla.) recorded 17 and 16 points, respectively while freshman A’dia Mathies (Louisville, Ky.) added 13 points in her debut.
Butler, located in Indianapolis, Ind., opens its season in Memorial after a 78-47 win over DePauw in its only exhibition game. Four starters return, including leading scorer Brittany Bowen, from last season’s squad that finished 20-12 and advanced to the second round of the WNIT.
This is just the fourth meeting between the programs in school history and the first since 2004. That year, UK defeated the Bulldogs 82-44 in Memorial Coliseum on Nov. 19. Kentucky is 3-0 all-time vs. Butler and 13-0 against teams from BU’s Horizon League.
