LEXINGTON, Ky. – University of Kentucky women’s basketball signee Maegan Conwright was named the Most Valuable Player of the University Interscholastic League Girls State Basketball Championship after leading Mansfield Timberview High School to its first Class 4A title last weekend in Austin, Texas.
Conwright, a 5-foot-9 guard/forward from Arlington, Texas, led Timberview (37-2) in scoring in both state tournament games with a combined 36 points. In the semifinal vs. Cibolo Steele, she recorded a team-high 20 points on 5-of-15 shooting, including 2-of-6 from beyond the arc. She also added three rebounds and three steals in 31 minutes of action. She followed that performance with 16 points, including 10 in the second half, to go along with six rebounds and five steals in the 55-39 win over Frisco Wakeland in the championship game.
Listed as the 36th-best guard in the nation by ESPN Hoopgurlz, Conwright has been a four -year starter at Timberview for Coach Candi Harvey. She has garnered many honors during her prep career, including being named All-State by both the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches and the Texas Girls Coaches Association in 2009. She also was a two-time TABC All-Region selection and a member of the Dallas Morning News’ All-Area team. Conwright was named the District 4-5A Co-Most Valuable Player last year after leading her team to the state championship game with an impressive 37-4 overall record. In 2008, she was named the District 4-5A Defensive MVP after averaging 10.0 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. She also participated in track and field, advancing and placing at the regional track meet in the long jump as a sophomore.
Conwright is one of five signees in UK’s top 10 recruiting class for next season. The class also includes McDonald’s All-American Jennifer O’Neill, a 5-6 guard from Saint Michael Academy and Bronx, N.Y., Sarah Beth Barnette, a 6-2 forward from Lexington Christian Academy in Lexington, Ky., Kastine Evans (pronounced cas-TEEN), a 5-8 guard from Norwich Free Academy in Salem, Conn., and LaQuinta Jefferson, a 6-0 guard from La Vergne High School in La Vergne, Tenn.
