LEXINGTON, Ky. — During the pinnacle of competition to date, senior Kristin Smith and junior Sharif Webb did not contemplate previous successes but took another step forward as they both produced wins in the hammer throw and 800 meter run respectively at the Tiger Track Classic and Pepsi Florida Relays, Friday.

Kristin Smith earned her second win in two tries to open the outdoor season perfect in the hammer throw competition at the Tiger Track Classic. Smith fell into second position heading into her fourth throw and after two consecutive foul attempts she threw a season best mark of 197-00/60.05m moving her into first place and would not be surpassed.

Sharif Webb, turned in a dominating performance at the Florida Relays as he finished a top the pack in the 800m run with a time of 1:47.75 besting the field by over half a second. Webb’s time when last week’s 800m run concluded was 1:48.44, which coincidently was the exact time of second place finisher in this week’s competition Fred Samoei from the University of Alabama.

In addition to Kristin Smith two other Wildcat hammer throwers garnered top 10 finishes with Ashley Muffet finishing in sixth place just above Heather Smith in seventh place. Muffet, completed one of six throws but that one throw of 172-05/52.26m is all it took for a good finish. Heather Smith threw a length of 169-09/51.75m on her fifth attempt after completing four of six throws.

The men’s and women’s distance athletes contributed six total top ten finishes on Friday, two for the men and four for the women. On the men’s side Josh Nadzam finished in ninth place with a time of 3:47.76 in the 1500m run. Also, freshman Matt Sonnenfeldt rounded out the top ten in the 5000m run with a time of 14.40.07.
