LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky track and field teams travel to compete in the historic Penn Relays held at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pa., April 22-24.

The 116th Penn Relays, nicknamed the Penn Relays Carnival for its festive atmosphere, is the large scale event showcasing some of the sport’s top athletes from around the country and world. For Penn Relays meet central go to www.thepennrelays.com.

“This meet is a mid-season break from the typical running that consists in the season,” Coach Don Weber said. “This is the first opportunity for some of our athletes to compete in an event of it’s size and caliber. It is dramatically different from other meets with some of the best teams in the country competing, giving us great preparation for the championship meets to come.”

The Penn Relays are the largest annual track and field meet in the United States and the largest annual relay meet in the world. Over the course of three days, 19,000 athletes from all levels will race in front of 115,000 spectators.

Kentucky will debut the men and women’s 4×800-meter-relay and distance medley teams for the first time this season.

One of the Penn Relays’ main attractions is the `USA vs. World’ competitions. Often being the highlight, the USA vs. World races consists of the U.S. National Team athletes competing against some of the world’s most renowned athletes.

This year’s buzz is due to the world’s fastest man, Usain Bolt set to compete Saturday, at 2:50 p.m. in the 4x100m relay.

Last weekend at the Tom Jones Memorial Classic the men and women’s 4x100m relays ran well, finishing with top times. The women’s 4x100m team earned a victory with a time of 45.39, while the men finished with a third-place spot and time of 41.91.

UK’s throwing corps will travel to San Diego, Calif., for the Triton Invitational. Hosted by University of California San Diego, the invitational will be held at Triton Track and Field Stadium April 23-24. Visit www.ucsdtritons.com for a full meet schedule.
