LEXINGTON, Ky. — Chelsea Oswald and the Kentucky women’s cross country team claimed victories at the 2010 Br. John “Paddy” Doyle/Iona Meet of Champions in Bronx, N.Y., Saturday.
After the first two meets of the year the UK women’s cross country team has equaled the result of outstanding sophomore Chelsea Oswald. Oswald breezed through the six-kilometer course winning the race by nearly 13 seconds with a time of 21:41.68 to take the women’s individual title, the second of her career. The team followed suit winning the meet with 62 points in a much tighter contest, between the Wildcats, Brown and LaSalle. The top three teams were separated by only three points with Brown and LaSalle divided by a single tally. Two weeks ago in San Francisco, Oswald finished second with the team paralleling her performance with a runner-up finish.
“The women ran very well, and I was pleased with their progress over the past two weeks,” head coach Don Weber said.
In a lineup that features three freshmen and two sophomores, freshman Taylor Wendler has added depth to the top tier of UK runners, finishing seventh for the second meet in a row with a time of 22:19. Returning sophomore and All-SEC recipient a year ago, Cally Macumber, turned in another strong performance finishing 11th in 22:29. Just behind in 14th, was freshman Anna Bostrom with a time of 22:32, making it her second top-15 finish in the first two meets of the year and of her career. The final scoring position was taken by freshman Allison Peare who finished 29th with a time of 23:05. Hiruni Wijayaratne and Suzanne Holt also competed finishing in 55th and 77th respectively.
The men didn’t fair quite as well finishing 10th, but sophomore Luis Orta came through again for the Wildcats. Orta claimed his fifth top-15 finish in six career meets, taking fifth Saturday. The native of Caracus, Venezuela, navigated the 8k course in 25:21 for the top spot on the team for the fourth time in his career. Freshman Stacey Eden, competing in his second career event, was the second finisher for UK in 41st with a time of 26:13.
The Kentucky cross country teams will be back in action two weekends from now, Oct. 2, for their first in-state meet of the year at the Greater Louisville Invitational. Both teams finished second in Louisville last season.
