LEXINGTON, Ky. — UK men’s tennis star Eric Quigley wasted no time to seal his ticket to the championship match of the 2010 D’Novo/ITA All-American Championships, posting two impressive wins over ranked foes at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla., on Saturday.
Quigley won his quarterfinal match over No. 13 Sanam Singh of Virginia 6-4, 6-1 Saturday morning to move into the semifinals against No. 45 Reid Carleton of Duke on Saturday afternoon. The native of Pewee Valley, Ky., then continued his dominance with a 6-4, 6-3, straight-sets victory over Carleton to advance to the championship.
Quigley and Carleton went back-and-forth in the first set before Quigley came out victorious. Carleton started the match with two straight wins, but Quigley answered with wins in four straight games to take a 4-2 lead. Carleton then came back to cut the UK junior’s lead to 5-4, but Quigley held serve to win the first set 6-4.
In the second set, Carleton jumped out with a win in the first game before Quigley bounced back and took a two-game lead. The two ranked players then held serve to take the match to 5-3 before Quigley broke Carleton to seal the match and earn his spot in the championship.
Quigley will face the winner of No. 3 Bradley Klahn of Stanford and Alex Domijan of Virginia in the championship match Sunday. A time is yet to be announced. Klahn advanced to the semifinals with a win over No. 10 Austen Childs of Louisville, while Domijan scored a win in the semifinals over No. 9 Alexandre Lacroix of Florida.
The victory over No. 45 Carleton for Quigley is one of five wins over a top-45 ranked player in the tournament. Quigley defeated No. 31 Neal Skupski of LSU (7-5, 6-1) in the opening round and followed that win with a victory over No. 44 Jamie Pulgar of North Carolina State (3-6, 6-3, 6-2.). On Friday, Quigley took down No. 28 John Peers of Baylor (4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-1), advancing to his second consecutive quarterfinal appearance at the ITA All-American Championships, where he took down No. 13 Singh of Virginia (6-4, 6-1).
