ATHENS, Ga. – Senior Colin Boevers led the Kentucky men’s track and field team to a seventh-place finish overall at the Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championships, with his second-straight SEC discus title on Sunday at the Spec Towns Track in Athens, Ga. The women’s squad finished eighth with 42 points, highlighted by senior Mary Angell’s 14 total points accumulated in the discus and shot put.

Boevers used a career-best throw of 196-00/59.74m to secure his second-straight discus championship on his opening throw of the competition. The senior eclipsed the field by 12 feet, seven inches, defeating a pair of Auburn freshmen Stephen Saenz (183-05/55.92m) and Marcus Popenfoose (179-11/54.84m). The title extends UK’s streak of discus champions to four straight dating back to Chase Madison in 2008 followed by Rashaud Scott in 2009.

“This was a great weekend for the throwers all the way around,” assistant coach of throwing events Doug Reynolds said. “We still have more to accomplish over the next month, but this will be a meet that the seniors will not soon forget. Lifetime-best performances for all three seniors and our fourth-straight discus championships are things that I will remember for the rest of my career as well. I couldn’t be more proud of them.”

Boevers, a native of Salt Lake City, Utah, was one of six Kentucky athletes that scored in multiple events. Boevers placed sixth in the shot put with a throw of 55-11.75/17.05m for three points. The leading point scorer for the men’s and women’s team combined was senior Mary Angell, who finished second in the discus throw (eight points) and third in the shot put (six points). Also with multiple-scoring performances were Keith Hayes, two third-place finishes in the 110m hurdles and 400m hurdles, Luis Orta, second place in the 3,000m steeplechase and fifth place in the 5,000m run and Precious Nwokey scoring with a fourth-place finish in the heptathlon and in the 4x400m relay.

The leading point scorer Angell, after a career performance on Saturday in the discus, kept it rolling with a personal-best throw of 53-06.25/16.31m in the shot put. Angell opened the shot put competition with two consecutive personal bests before eventually securing her top throw on her final turn. The senior is now third on both UK’s discus and shot put all-time lists.

On the men’s side, continuing his steady improvement since coming to Kentucky at the beginning of the year, Keith Hayes finished third in the 110m hurdles with a career-best time of 13.70, which ranks second all-time at UK. Hayes continued his streak of PR’s in the 400m hurdles with a time of 50.96, improving his place on UK’s all-time list to third. Sophomore teammate Bradshaw, finished just behind Hayes in the 110m hurdles with a personal-best time of 14.15, moving him up the UK record books to sixth from his previous spot at eighth (14.22).

In two grueling long-distant events, the 3,000m steeplechase and 5,000m run, junior Luis Orta claimed top-five finishes in both. Orta added to his second-place finish in the steeplechase with a fifth-place performance in the 5,000m run with a time of 14:25.68.

Freshman Matt Hillenbrand scored his first career points as a Wildcat, placing sixth in a tough 1,500m run with a personal-best time of 3:51.48. On the women’s side in 1,500m, sophomore Cally Macumber bettered Hillenbrand’s finish coming in third with a time of 4:30.09. Macumber came into the meet as a four-time All-SEC performer and will add to that number.

Listed below are all of UK’s scorers over the four-day meet and the final team standings, including results from Sunday’s competition.

Kentucky will be back in action at the NCAA East Preliminary Round in Bloomington, Ind., on May 26-28. Updates will be available later in the week on which UK student-athletes will qualify for the meet.
