SECAUCUS, N.J. — One of the most decorated performers in Kentucky baseball history, junior right-handed pitcher Alex Meyer has been selected with the No. 23 overall pick in the first round of the 2011 MLB Draft by the Washington Nationals, it was announced by MLB Commissioner Bud Selig on Monday night at the MLB Network Studio 42.

With the 23rd overall selection in the draft, Meyer has become the highest draft pick in Kentucky baseball history, since Chad Green’s No. 8 overall selection in the 1996 MLB Draft. Meyer became the fourth overall first round pick in UK baseball history joining Green, James Paxton (2009, No. 37 overall) and Joe Blanton (2002, No. 24 overall).

“I am extremely excited to be selected by the Washington Nationals,” Meyer said during a teleconference on Monday night. “I don’t think it could have happened to a better organization. Obviously you can see them on the rise with the prospects they have been selecting over the last few years with Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper and obviously this year they selected (Rice third baseman) Anthony Rendon with their first pick (No. 6 overall). It is pretty special to be selected by a club like that and I couldn’t be happier.”

A native of Greensburg, Ind., Meyer had a dynamic season as UK’s Friday-night starter. A 6-foot-9, 220-pound righty, Meyer led UK in starts (14), wins (seven), ERA (2.94), complete games (four), complete-game shutouts (two), innings pitched (101), strikeouts (110) and opponent batting average (.222).

A 20th-round pick of the Boston Red Sox out of high school in 2008, Meyer became the first UK starter selected to the All-SEC team since Chris Rusin in 2008 after the league coaches tabbed him second-team All-Southeastern Conference. He finished the year as the SEC leader in strikeouts, strikeouts looking (48), innings pitched per game (7.21), complete games and complete-game shutouts. Meyer ranked second in the SEC in innings pitched, ninth in ERA, eighth in wins, second in strikeouts per game (9.8) and fifth in opponent batting average.

With 110 strikeouts in 2011, Meyer became the 10th player in program history to fan 100 or more in a season, ranking eighth in UK single-season history. Meyer, who ranked No. 9 in the NCAA in strikeouts, owns a 13-12 career record in 211.1 innings, striking out 253 the fifth-best total in UK career annals.

“Coming to campus everyone knew I was going to be a huge project from the beginning,” Meyer said. “I knew my stuff was good when I got here it just needed to be fine tuned a little bit. When coach (Gary) Henderson brought me in he just laid out exactly what his plan was for me. We did a good job of accomplishing it. It took a little longer for us then we would have hoped for but we got it done, it was just a long process. He did a great job with me of teaching me the game of pitching. I came from a small town and didn’t know too much about it, I was just throwing the ball. Coach Henderson really helped me out to develop into a pitcher and helped me get to where I am today.”

A two-time SEC Pitcher of the Week and a Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week in 2011, Meyer finished the year on a blistering pace, totaling six consecutive quality starts and owning a 4-1 record and a 1.97 ERA in those outings. Meyer owned 10 quality starts in 2011, posting a 6-3 record and a 1.88 ERA in his quality outings. Over his final three starts, Meyer went 3-0 with a 1.61 ERA, including wins over No. 1 Vanderbilt, Georgia and No. 4 Florida. Meyer faced off with the four SEC division winners, Arkansas, Florida, South Carolina and Vanderbilt during 2011 and dominated, posting a 3-1 mark with a 1.36 ERA in those starts, allowing only 19 hits in 33 innings.

Since UK burst onto the college baseball scene in claiming the SEC Championship in 2006, Kentucky has boasted a bevy of draft selections, including a school-record seven selections following a 44-win season in 2008. Since 2006 and including Meyer’s pick, the Wildcats have had a total of 35 players selected in the MLB Draft or signing a free agent contract. Since 1965, UK has had a total of 147 players drafted or sign a free agent contract, with 24-percent of the 147 total players coming since the 2006 season.

The MLB Draft will resume on Tuesday and Wednesday, with the remaining 49 rounds. Several UK stars are expected to be selected on Day 2 and Day 3 of the draft, which will be live on MLB.com.
