LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky men’s track and field senior Sharif Webb qualified for the 800 meter run finals of the USA Championships on Thursday with a sixth-place finish time of 1:47.55.
Webb, a Paramus, N.J., native, led the Wildcats during the outdoor season in the 800m run. The first round featured four heats, with the top three runners from each heat automatically qualifying for the semifinals and the top four times outside of those 12 runners also qualifying for the semifinals. With a time of 1:47.55, Webb finished fourth in the third heat but had the top time among all racers who did not automatically qualify and has earned a spot in Friday’s semifinal scheduled to begin at 8:15 p.m. ET. Webb’s time was the sixth fastest overall.
“I was pleased and impressed with Sharif’s fast finish,” head coach Don Weber said. “I am eager to see him race tomorrow.”
Senior Mary Angell had a strong showing in the women’s discus throw on Thursday. Angell, a native of Byron Center, Mich., finished in 11th place in the women’s senior discus throw with a throw of 54.02m/177-02.
Former Wildcats Andy Fryman and Chase Madison were also in the mix on Thursday. Fryman finished eighth in the men’s senior hammer throw with a throw of 70.90m/232-07. Madison came in 12th place in the men’s senior discus throw with a distance of 58.47m/191-10.
In addition to Webb competing in the men’s 800m run semifinal on Friday, freshmen Matt Hillenbrand and Adam Kahleifeh will compete in the men’s junior 1,500m run semifinal at 1:45 p.m. ET. Hillenbrand and Kahleifeh had the second and third-best times, respectively, on the team this past season in the 1,500m run.
Also competing on Friday from Kentucky will be senior Jenna Martin. Martin, a native of Nova Scotia, is competing in the Canadian National Championships on Friday and will race in the 400m dash at 3:40 p.m. ET.
