LEXINGTON, Ky. — Fresh off a dominating 2-0 season-opening win over Dayton on Friday night, the Kentucky men’s soccer team returns to action hosting No. 9 Michigan, with kickoff on Sunday slated for 7 p.m. ET at the UK Soccer Complex.

Kentucky (1-0-0) posted its 12th all-time win in a season lidlifter on Friday night, getting goals from senior C.J. Tappel and sophomore Tyler Riggs, with Tappel adding an assist and Charles Pettys notching his first career two-assist game. UK sophomore goalkeeper Tyler Beadle charted his fifth career shutout, saving two shots.

The win marked the 200th career victory for UK head coach Ian Collins, who has added a sterling 189 wins during his 19-year tenure as UK’s head coach. Following the game, Tappel and UK senior Brad Walker joined UK Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart in presenting the game ball to Collins at midfield.

Michigan (0-1-0) is coming off a season that saw the Wolverines advance to the NCAA College Cup as one of the top four teams in college soccer, falling to eventual NCAA Champion Akron in the quarterfinals. UM fell in its season opener against Bowling Green State, allowing two second-half goals despite a 16-11 shot advantage at BGSU.

The Wolverines sneaked out a win over the Wildcats in the meeting in Ann Arbor, Mich., in 2010, posting a 3-2 win in overtime. Michigan rode the red-hot boot of eventual NCAA freshman of the year Soony Saad, who completed a hat trick with a golden goal in extra time for the UM win. Saad has since transitioned into Major League Soccer, playing for Sporting Kansas City. Riggs netted his second career goal in the meeting last season.

In the last meeting in Lexington in 2008, UK got goals from Marco dos Santos and Barry Rice in a 2-1 win, played in front of the sixth-largest crowd in UK Soccer Complex history, 1,988 fans. The win in 2008 marked the first win over UM in program history.
