LEXINGTON, Ky. — Kentucky men’s soccer freshman defender Marco Bordon and junior midfielder Charles Pettys have been selected to the Cal Legacy Classic All-Tournament team, it was announced.
Kentucky (4-2-1) played in two games during the Cal Legacy Classic, facing Stanford in its home opener on Sept. 9 and No. 13 California on Sept. 11 in Berkeley, Calif. The Wildcats suffered a 3-1 loss to the Cardinal and a 3-2 setback at Cal.
Bordon excelled on the backline for the Wildcats on the weekend and Pettys added his first goal of the season and an assist in the two games.
A native of Sáo Paulo, Brazil, Bordon has started five games on the backline for UK, missing a two-game stretch due to injury. An athletic 6-foot-1 defender, Bordon has logged 446 minutes on the year, firing two shots. Bordon’s offensive threat created a UK goal at Cal, making a breakout run down the near sideline and drawing a foul that created the corner kick that saw Sam Brooks’ header goal.
Pettys excelled during his two-game stretch in his native California, as the Los Angeles native netted a go-ahead goal in the game at Stanford in front of friends and family and lofted a corner kick at Cal that saw Brooks head it in for his first goal of the year and erase a 1-0 Cal lead. On the year, Pettys owns a team-high four assists and one goal, taking a team-best 41 corner kicks through seven games.
The Wildcats return to action on Friday, traveling to Columbia, S.C., for the Gamecock Classic, hosted by South Carolina. UK will face High Point on Friday at 5 p.m. ET and No. 15 Brown on Sunday at 11 a.m. ET. UK was originally scheduled to face Brown on Friday and High Point on Sunday, but the schedule was switched, with South Carolina facing Brown on Friday and High Point on Sunday.
WILDCATS STILL IN POLLS
Despite falling in the two-game stretch in the Golden State, the Wildcats are still ranked, checking in No. 29 in the latest College Soccer News top-30 poll, released on Monday morning.
UK checks in No. 29 in the CSN poll, falling from No. 21 last week. UK was ranked as high as No. 15 in the National Soccer Coaches Association top-25 last week, its highest ranking since 2009. The Wildcats moved out of the latest Soccer Times top-25, with the NSCAA poll to be released Tuesday afternoon.
UK SOCCER GOD’S PANTRY FOOD DRIVE SET FOR SEPT. 23
The Kentucky men’s soccer program, the Southeastern Conference and the Student-Athlete Advisory Council will participate in the God’s Pantry food drive, set for the game on Sept. 23 vs. Evansville at the UK Soccer Complex.
Fans can bring in canned food to the game vs. Evansville, set for 7 p.m. ET on Sept. 23. Any fans that bring in five cans will receive free admission for the contest with the Purple Aces.
2011 marks the fifth anniversary of the SEC Together We CAN Drive. And to commemorate the occasion, student-athletes across the Southeastern Conference and UK are trying to reach 500,000 pounds in food and donations. From Friday, Sept. 16 thru Sunday, Oct. 2, all 12 SEC schools will participate in the project that benefits local food banks and shelters. And remember … Together We CAN in the SEC.
