OMAHA, Neb. — In a matchup of the second-best offense in collegiate soccer and the nation’s best defense, No. 3 Creighton netted two second-half goals to post a 2-0 win over No. 21 Kentucky, in front of 2,557 on a windy Wednesday night at Morrison Stadium.
Kentucky (6-3-1) faced a stiff challenge in its one-day trip to Omaha, as the Wildcats flew into town on Wednesday to play the game, before flying back to Lexington for classes Thursday. The game pitted UK, ranked No. 2 in the NCAA in goals scored, against Creighton, the only team in the NCAA to not allow a goal in 2011. UK has suffered only three losses on the year, all coming on the road, at Stanford, at No. 13 Cal and at No. 3 Creighton, with the Wildcats owning wins over No. 15 Brown and No. 9 Michigan.
The Wildcats got a good outing from sophomore keeper Tyler Beadle, who in addition to a gorgeous save of a penalty kick in the first half, totaled five saves.
Overall, UK took 12 shots, while the Jays managed 16 efforts, with Creighton entering the game allowing only seven shots per game. Creighton also took six corner kicks, while the Wildcats managed three corners.
UK was led offensively by reigning Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week Tyler Riggs, who fired two shots, while Marco Bordon took a team-best three shots and Jacob Kemper fired two efforts. UK also got shots from Steven Perinovic, Matt Lodge, C.J. Tappel, Byron Vega and Charles Pettys.
UK returns to action on Friday, taking a brief break from its road journeys with a matchup with Evansville at 7 p.m. ET at the UK Soccer Complex. UK then hits the road for a six-day trip through Orlando and Miami, facing FIU and No. 19 Central Florida next week. Before the trip to Florida, UK will have traveled over 6,000 miles in less than two weeks, including trips to both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
The Jays extended their home-winning streak to five and have not allowed a goal in their seven games in 2011. Keeper Brian Holt totaled five saves for his sixth clean sheet of the year.
Creighton (7-0-0) got on the board in the 54th minute, as Tyler Polak played a ball into the box for Ethan Finlay, who flipped it to Andrew Ribeiro who netted it at the near post past a diving Beadle for his second goal of the year. The assist was Finlay’s fourth of the year and Polak’s second.
The Jays added a goal in the 59th frame, as Finlay connected on his team-high fifth goal of the season, getting the assist from Bruno Castro, his fourth of the year.
