LEXINGTON, Ky. — After an impressive opening weekend that saw junior Anthony Rossi take down the nation’s fourth-ranked player en route to the singles title at the Duke Fab Four Invitational, the University of Kentucky men’s tennis team will travel to compete in the Southern Intercollegiate Championships beginning Friday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.

Kentucky will send 10 players to Athens to play in the 44th edition of the Southern Intercollegiate Championships, which is the oldest fall collegiate tennis tournament in America. Full draws for the event will not be posted until Thursday evening.

The Wildcats will be led at the tournament by senior No. 3 Eric Quigley, who is the overall No. 1 seed at the event and will be playing in his first action of the fall season. Quigley, who is a three-time All-America honoree, had a fantastic junior season, tying the school record for wins in a single season with a 45-15 record.

Rossi, who is the 14th seed, will also compete at the event along with senior Matt Davis, sophomores Tom Jomby, Grant Roberts, Alejandro Gomez, Panav Jha, Maks Gold and Ryuji Hirooka, and true freshman Brett Johnson.  A full list of participants is posted at the bottom of the release, including doubles pairings.

The 2011 tournament features participants from 26 schools, including Auburn, The Citadel, Davidson, Eastern Kentucky, East Tennessee State, Florida, Georgia, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Georgia Tech, Liberty, Lipscomb, LSU, Mercer, Minnesota, Mississippi State, NC State, Samford, South Carolina, Stetson, Tennessee, Tennessee Tech, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech and Winthrop.

The field will be divided into three singles divisions and two doubles divisions with a champion being crowned from each division. A maximum of two rounds of singles consolation will be played for the players that fall in the opening round. No doubles consolation will be played.

Rossi’s singles title headlined the opening weekend for the Wildcats, including his win over No. 4 Henrique Cunha of Duke. The native of Marseille, France went 4-0 at the event, taking down solid performers from Duke, North Carolina State and South Carolina. Rossi was joined at the event by Roberts, Jha and Gold. Roberts won his first round singles match and teamed with Gold to earn a doubles win as well, while Jha also gathered a singles victory and a doubles win with Rossi.

UK sent the other half of its talented squad to Chicago to compete in the Olympia Fields Invitational. Senior No. 20 Alex Musialek went 3-1 at the event, taking down two ranked foes in No. 45 Nick Andrews of California and No. 113 Ben Chen of Texas. Jomby and Gomez also played well with Jomby going 3-1 with his first win over a ranked foe at the collegiate level and Gomez posting an unblemished 4-0 record.
