Men's Golf

Sept. 26, 2011

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Due to heavy rain overnight and throughout the morning in the Toledo, Ohio, area, the University of Kentucky men’s golf team will now be competing in a shortened tournament this week. It has been announced that day one of the Inverness Intercollegiate Invitational will be cancelled, with the tournament now consisting of 18 holes to be played Tuesday morning.

The Inverness Intercollegiate, which was originally scheduled to be a two-day, 54-hole tournament with 36 holes played Monday and 18 holes played Tuesday, will now just be 18 holes Tuesday. The tournament is hosted by the University of Toledo and is being played at the challenging Inverness Club (par 71, 7,255 yards). Tuesday’s round will begin at 9 a.m. ET with a shotgun start.

Following the first-place finish last weekend at the UK Bluegrass Fall Invitational, UK men’s golf head coach Brian Craig said the Inverness Club would likely be the most difficult course the Wildcats play all year, and that the Wildcats would need to string together three good rounds against the stiff competition.

The impressive 11-team field includes Kentucky, East Tennessee State, Florida, Kent State, Liberty, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Penn State, South Alabama and host-school Toledo.

The Wildcats have sent sophomores Cody Martin and Stephen Powers, juniors Joseph Barr and Chase Parker, and senior Mads Kristensen. Sophomore Matthew Anderson, who finished in a tie for third at the UK Bluegrass Fall Invitational, will compete as an individual.

Martin has paved the way thus far for Kentucky, opening the season with back-to-back top-five finishes, including a second-place mark at the UK Bluegrass Fall Invitational. Martin enters the Inverness Intercollegiate with a scoring average of 70.00.

The Wildcats have competed in the Inverness Intercollegiate four times under the direction of Craig, including a victory in 2004. Kentucky last played in the tournament in 2007 when they opened the season in Toledo.
