LEXINGTON, Ky. – University of Kentucky men’s golf sophomore Cody Martin carded an even-par round of 71 on Tuesday at the Inverness Intercollegiate Invitational to finish in a tie for fourth place, and lead the Kentucky men’s golf team to a fourth place overall finish.
“We played a solid round of golf today and had a legitimate chance to win with four holes to play,” UK head coach Brian Craig said. “We didn’t finish like we hoped to, but we made solid progress this week.”
Martin has paced the Wildcats throughout the young season, recording top-five finishes in each of Kentucky’s first three tournaments. Of the seven rounds of golf the Union, Ky., native has carded this season, five have been even-par or better.
“A big congratulations has to go out to Cody Martin on another top-five finish and a superb start to the season,” Craig said.
Day one of the Inverness Intercollegiate was cancelled Monday due to heavy rain in the Toledo, Ohio, area, causing the tournament to be shortened to Tuesday’s 18 holes. The Wildcats competed well at the challenging Inverness Club (par 71, 7,255 yards), placing two golfers inside the top 10, including senior Mads Kristensen who finished in a tie for seventh with a 1-over par 72.
Junior Joseph Barr finished in a tie for 17th with a 3-over par 74. It was Barr’s third top-25 finish of the season and second finish inside the top-20.
Sophomore Stephen Powers and junior Chase Parker each recorded scores of 6-over par. Playing as an individual, sophomore Matthew Anderson carded an 8-over par 79.
The Inverness Intercollegiate Invitational featured an impressive 11-team field including Kentucky, East Tennessee State, Florida, Kent State, Liberty, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Penn State, South Alabama and host-school Toledo. The Wildcats have competed in the Inverness Intercollegiate five times now under the direction of Craig, including a victory in 2004. Kentucky’s fourth-place finish is its second-best at the Inverness Intercollegiate.
The Wildcats will tee off again in two weeks at the Bearcat Invitational in Hebron, Ky. on Oct. 10-11. For more news and information on the Kentucky men’s golf team, go to UKathletics.com.
